Not exactly an expert in this field, though both ears remain wide-open.

I'm certain that if one could possibly "find their way" off-the-grid, the hi-fi would sound better, the computer and video displays would look better, and the children might just be out of harms way regarding ELF, EMF, & EMI.

Perhaps a little jump over to the NRDC website for continued research may be advised.

Thanks for the link, dark starz.

NRDC has made an interesting map that shows in which areas development is prohibited, restricted, and should be avoided.

I, too, have a dream of living "off the grid" but I have realized that there is just not enough land for everyone to live this dream. Metropolitan centers will continue to exist for a long while and if we can power them with cleaner energy, then these opportunities should be taken (with proper environmental consideration of course)...

As for the ELF, EMF, EMI... any of your home appliances generate all of these in some quantity... I do agree that the levels of these things are much lower when you are living outside of a urban/suburban area.

Here's a tidy little backyard project worthy of your review and consideration.

"Off the grid in Berkeley".

Hopefully not for the in-laws!
